One in a million

His older sister has 3 exams on Tuesday - Literature, Biology and Geography, (which I think is terrible - imagine, 3 mugging papers in one morning!!) and was busy studying on saturday afternoon. My son, N, who was getting himself a snack (of blueberries and raspberries) did the sweetest thing. He washed extra, and brought a bowl up to his sister's room for her to snack on whilst she studied!!

Later that evening, when we were watching TV, lil D asked for ice cream. Not moving, as I was waiting for a commercial break, this brother went to the fridge, got a bowl, scooped up Lil D's favourite ice cream flavour, washed some fruits, and added it to the ice cream and gave it to her!!

What more can you ask for??

Much as he tests and drives me up the wall ever so often, I think as a brother, he is one in a million!!

WHY GOD MADE MOMS

Someone sent me this for Mother's day. Have a read, and a good laugh!! I am quite sure my kids were responsible for some of the answers!!

Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions:

Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's mom like me.

What kind of a little girl was your mom?
1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.

3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Why did your mom marry your dad?
1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friends.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Glass House

Glass walls are increasingly becoming a feature in most newly built houses. It gives the illusion of a bigger space, and it brings the outdoors in.

One of the "perks" of living in a glass house is that you get to enjoy a thunderstorm in all its glory!

Last night (or rather early this morning) was a dark and stormy night (ok, morning). I have 2 walls in my bedroom that are made of glass from floor to ceiling. So I got to "enjoy" that thunderstorm.

With every flash of lightning, my whole room lit up, even with the blinds fully drawn. The sound of the thunder was magnified, probably by the light effects.

I decided to check on little D.

At first, I couldnt see her on her bed. Then I noticed a "lump" at the corner. The poor dear was all curled up, with her bolster covering her eyes, all wrapped up from head to toes in her quilt - like a cocoon. She was terrified of the storm, but chose to block it out, instead of waking me up from my slumber. What a sweetie!!

Man's best friend

It has always been said that a dog is a man's best friend.

My kids have time and again pestered me for a pet dog, but my reply to them have always been a "No". I have enough work looking after 3 kids, and I dont need a pet to add to my list of things to do.

A friend of mine who recently got a pet dog told me to reconsider. She told me that after her family adopted a dog, her youngest, who was rather reserved, really opened up. I have also read numerous stories about the benefits of having a dog. So it really got me considering whether I should actually get my kids a dog. After all, the dog could also double up as a guard dog for the home.

But do you know what would really make me change my mind? I am very sure you would change your mind about getting your kids a dog too! A dog like this:

It then wouldnt only be a man's best friend, but also a woman's!!

Focus on Hygiene

With the current Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak, we have been focusing on hygiene at home again.

Previously, I always held the notion that its ok to contract a little germs coz thats the way to build immunity.

With my oldest, milk bottles were sterilised until she was way past one, her plates, forks and spoons were rinsed in hot water before use. If something she was eating fell on the floor, into the bin it went. Cleanlinest was of utmost importance.

When my second child came along, our hygiene standards dropped a notch. He was allowed to behave the way little boys LOVED to behave - rolling on the floor in restaurants, dig in dirt, lick his dirty fingers, eat his dropped biscuit (tho' the 10 second rule applied).

And when my third child came along, .... urm ... I am embarrased to say, we were even more relaxed!! Even that 10 second rule didnt quite matter anymore.

The funny thing is : comparing my 3 kids - the youngest fell sick the least!! I remember numerous trips to the paediatrician for my oldest. The long waits due to her fevers, numerous colds and flus, and of course diarrhoea. And we were such regulars at the clinic - not a month went by without at least a visit!

But with this flu outbreak, we are not taking any chances. The kids are reminded to wash their hands with soap more frequently, not to rub their eyes, and to practise more consideration especially when sneezing or coughing. The previous SARS outbreak has struck fear in our hearts. We are not taking any chances!! Are you??

Labour Day Long weekend

Just had the Labour Day long weekend here. Thot it was the best time for the kids to hit the books, especially with the exams starting this week.

But you know, kids cant stay at their books for very long. Every so often, they will say that they are bored or they had finished studying , which I am very sure they had NOT!!

So for R&R we baked cookies!! Milo cookies, the recipe coutesy of my friend R.
And they decided that they had to add M&Ms to the cookies to make it more delicious!!

MILO COOKIES
Ingredients: 125g butter
125g sugar
125g brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 egg
215g self-raising flour,sifted)
125g Milo,sifted )-----> after sifting these 2 together in a bowl,
stir them to get it well- mixed before folding-in

Method : 1) Preheat oven to 180degC.
2) Beat butter, sugars until creamy.
3) Then beat in egg n vanilla essence.
4) Then fold in sifted flour and Milo .
5) Roll heaped teaspoons of mixture into balls, onto greased baking tray.
You may flatten with a moistened fork, if you wish. Then add any other goodies like M&Ms , if you like.
6) Bake in oven for 12mins to 15 mins until light golden .

I must say, the cookies proved to be a good snack for them in between their studies!!
