Help!!

Greedy me usually looks forward to dinner. Never mind if it is home cooked, bought or in a restaurant ... as long as the food is good.

This friday, hubby and I have been invited to dinner by a customer of ours. (We run a little business from home). Initially I agreed with hubby to go, but I have since changed my mind. Unusual for me to not look forward to dinner!

Why? Our host faxed across the guest list some time last week, and there is not going to be any familiar faces at the dinner ... in fact I dont even know the host nor his wife, hubby knows them better. Also, hubby probably regrets telling me that everyone one on that dinner guest list (apart from ourselves) can be googled!!

Seems like some big hip high society dinner, even tho it will be a home-cooked meal!! Since I left the corporate world some 9 years ago, I have not rubbed shoulders with people like this, and this lowly housewife who now only knows where to get the best and freshest market produce is likely to feel terribly out of place. What am I going to wear, and what am I going to talk to them about?? I have no clue!! I am going to feel so terribly out of place!

It's too late to back out since we RSVP'd last week. So, how?? Any tips on what I should do? or any thing that can help me look invisible? Maybe some super contagious germs that I can catch that would save me from the dinner!! HELP!!

On the contrary, GO. Attend the dinner. You will Ask the question and steer the conversation. You will be the very interested gracious listener. Wear that little black dress/skirt? And that very expensive necklace?

Mmmm.... Perhaps a pair of jeans with a nice-embroidered kebaya top. It's casual yet chic.

As for conversation topic; I'm sure you can handle lah. You did say that you/hubby run a business. Surely you know the overview of all (if not the details)...

You will be alright, just be yourself. Put on something you feel most comfortable with. And just wear a smile!

Best.

Haha SAHM, your post makes me laugh =) I can fully understand your situation, it is just like when I have to mingle with prominent figures like MPs. Wondering what should I say, etc. I may not be an expert in these area though but the key thing is 1)just be yourself, 2)dress in something you feel comfortable and lastly, do some info gathering on the people you will be meeting and think of some possible topic to do small talks. Hope it helps! =)

Go for it, SAHM, I know you'll do wonderfully... and you just have to be yourself! And no, no, you're not a lowly housewife, and no, no, choi, choi, don't catch anything! But I understand what u mean you know your market/supermarket inside out... LOL!

Enjoy yourself... the food, yes, and also the company!

I'll catch u later! Been so caught up, .. and reprising my home alone later this week. Um, not looking fwd to that tho'.

Hmm... I totally understand what you mean by the possibility of feeling out of place. I feel the same insecurity too. Yet I guess self-definition ultimately lies in ourselves.

I'd say, go and just be yourself! =) You're intelligent, funny and easy-going. Someone gotta show how very charming SAHMs can be. I'm proud of you, SAHM. So, go do your true clique (us) proud.

Wah, I can't stop laughing at BP's comment!

If you feel that people will look down on SAHM, you are not totally one cos you still help out your hubby with his business. Even if it is not, just pretend you are one. lol. Sometimes, silence is a bliss. Most important thing is SMILE. Exchange glances, those sort of thing. On clothing wise, I can't comment cos I don't know what you have in your closet. It is better to over dress than under dress ;)

Thanks everyone!

I survived the dinner. The hosts were most gracious hosts , and were very hospitable despite their wealth!!

And the dinner was awesome - a 8 course equivalent of a 3 michelin star meal!!
